Mr. Brown is an independent financial advisor who works with successful individuals, their families and their businesses.
He provides advice; comprehensive advice that integrates many aspects of a client’s financial life, from retirement planning to investing to estate preservation and risk management.
He provides action; the ability to make sure the client’s plans are not only discussed but get done.
He does not represent any particular investment or other product. Rather, he represents the client in selecting the right vehicles with which to execute the client’s plan.
While he often begins working with new clients on a specific immediate need (e.g., the need to invest rolled over 401(k) assets) his goal is to establish a long term relationship that brings focus and structure to the client’s financial plan.
Doug got his Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from the University of Chicago. He has Series 7 (General Securities Representative) and 24 (General Securities Principal) FINRA licenses and is a Registered Representative and Investment Advisor Representative with NFP Securities, Inc. He also holds an Illinois insurance license and is a Certified Financial Planner™.
Prior to joining The Advisor’s Group in 1996, Doug was a marketing executive for several Chicago companies including The Quaker Oats Company.
About his change in career Doug writes, “My approach to building a financial planning practice was influenced by several less than satisfactory experiences as a client. A number of times Jeanne and I met with different financial advisors who promised to help us create and execute a financial plan. I was disappointed when the advisors came back and recommended nothing but large amounts of life insurance or an investment in a limited family of the firm’s proprietary investment products. In the end, we felt that the advisor was not necessarily looking out for us but rather for the interests of his firm.
“The idea of independence became central to my approach in building my practice. By being an independent advisor I can recommend non-proprietary products that are truly necessary and appropriate for our clients. In addition, we make sure that the client knows how and how much we get paid.”
Doug and his wife Jeanne, an attorney, live in Western Springs with their four children.
About Doug’s Staff
Sherry Bergslien is Doug’s Administrative Assistant. It is an unfortunate fact that the investment field is one of the most heavily regulated and, therefore, paperwork-intensive businesses around. Thank goodness for Sherry. She is a whiz at making things easy on our clients.
Sherry can be reached directly at (630) 916-4208 or at Sherry.Bergslien@AdvisorsGroupChicago.com.
